Starting August 1, 2025, the EPFO mandates UAN allotment and activation via the UMANG App using Face Authentication Technology (FAT). This initiative streamlines UAN generation, allowing members to independently access EPF services like withdrawals and balance checks. The UMANG App introduces new facilities, simplifying the process for both new and existing UAN holders, enhancing accessibility and efficiency.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced a major update that mandates the allotment and activation of Universal Account Number (UAN) through the UMANG App using Face Authentication Technology (FAT) starting August 1, 2025.

According to an EPFO circular on August 1, 2025, “In order to ensure error-free generation of UAN, it has been decided that w.e.f. 1st August, 2025 the allotment/generation of UAN will be done only through the Aadhaar based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in UMANG App.”

Employees must activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) in order to use the Employee Provident Fund Organization’s (EPFO) online services, such as obtaining EPF benefits and taking part in the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) program. In particular, it is necessary to access services like EPF withdrawals, balance checks, and information updates.
