OpenAI<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0made waves this week with its bold assertion to a UK parliamentary committee that it would be \u201cimpossible\u201d to develop today\u2019s leading AI<\/a><\/strong> systems without using vast amounts of copyrighted data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company argued that advanced AI<\/a><\/strong> tools like ChatGPT<\/strong><\/a> require such broad training that adhering to copyright law would be utterly unworkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In written testimony, OpenAI\u00a0stated\u00a0that between expansive copyright laws and the ubiquity of protected online content, \u201cvirtually every sort of human expression\u201d would be off-limits for training data. From news articles to forum comments to digital images, little online content can be utilised freely and legally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to OpenAI<\/a><\/strong>, attempts to create capable AI<\/a><\/strong> while avoiding copyright infringement would fail: \u201cLimiting training data to public domain books and drawings created more than a century ago \u2026 would not provide AI systems that meet the needs of today\u2019s citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
