Apple\u00a0is reportedly planning to allow iPhone and iPad users in Europe to install apps from third-party app stores\u2014potentially within a matter of weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move from Apple comes in response to mounting regulatory pressure from European lawmakers demanding more competition in the app ecosystem.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Apple insider Mark Gurman in Bloomberg\u2019s \u201cPower On\u201d\u00a0newsletter, Apple engineers are racing to launch support for app sideloading on European iOS devices to comply with the EU\u2019s new\u00a0Digital Markets Act\u00a0(DMA). The DMA aims to limit the power of so-called Big Tech \u201cgatekeepers\u201d like Apple and Google.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gurman reports that Apple plans to enable sideloading \u201cin the coming weeks\u201d to avoid massive DMA penalties, which could include fines of up to 10 percent of annual revenue. However, the sideloading capability would only apply to European iOS users while iPhones and iPads sold elsewhere would retain Apple\u2019s strict control over apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
